How to Talk to Your Kids About AI

Practical, age-appropriate ways to start the conversation and keep it going.

Your kids are likely already meeting AI: in voice assistants, recommendations, games and school tools. You don't need to be an expert to guide them. Curiosity and a few clear ideas go a long way.

Start with what they've noticed

Ask open questions: "Have you ever talked to a computer that answered back?" or "How do you think the video app knows what you like?" Let their answers guide where you go next.

Key ideas by age

  • Ages 4-6: AI is a computer program, not a person or a pet. It can help, and it can be wrong. Always use it with a grown-up.
  • Ages 7-9: AI learns from lots of examples. It can make mistakes, so we check. Keep personal information private.
  • Ages 10-12: Training data shapes what AI does. Good prompts get better results. Some images and voices are AI-made, so check sources.
  • Teens: Language models predict text, so fluent doesn't mean true. Bias, privacy and academic honesty are worth real discussion.

Model the habits you want

Use AI together and think out loud: "That answer sounds confident. How could we check it?" Kids learn more from watching how you evaluate information than from rules alone.

Keep it a two-way conversation

  • Avoid making AI sound either magical or scary. It's a tool people build and choose how to use.
  • Let them teach you something they discovered.
  • Revisit the topic as they grow and their tools change.

Set simple family agreements

Decide together which tools are okay, where devices are used, and what to do if something feels wrong. The most important agreement: they can always come to you without getting in trouble.
