Many AI tools work by processing what you type, say or upload. A few simple habits help protect your family's information.
Assume what you type may be stored
Depending on the service, conversations may be saved, reviewed or used to improve the product. Read the privacy policy and settings for each tool your family uses, and look for options to limit history or opt out of training where available.
What not to share
Teach kids (and remind yourself) to keep these out of AI chats:
- Full names, addresses, phone numbers and school names
- Passwords, account numbers and ID numbers
- Photos of children, especially with identifying details
- Health information and private family matters
Settings worth checking
- Account age and parental controls. Use child accounts where offered.
- Chat and voice history. Know where it's stored and how to delete it.
- Microphone, camera and location permissions. Grant only what an app truly needs.
- Sharing features. Some tools let conversations be shared by link. Make sure kids know what that means.
Make privacy a family habit
Explain the why: information shared online can be hard to take back. Practice a simple rule together: if you wouldn't put it on a poster at school, don't type it into an app.
