Specific tools will keep changing. The skills that help kids use any tool well are more lasting. Here are the ones worth nurturing, and everyday ways to practice them.
Critical thinking
Evaluating information, spotting weak reasoning and asking good questions.
At home: When you see a surprising claim, ask together, "How do we know that's true?"
Clear communication
Explaining an idea, asking for what you need, and giving instructions others (or an AI) can follow.
At home: Have kids explain how to do something they're good at, step by step.
Creativity
Generating ideas, combining them in new ways, and making things that didn't exist before.
At home: Use open-ended prompts like "What if...?" and value the process, not just the result.
Problem solving and persistence
Breaking big problems into smaller steps, trying, failing and trying again.
At home: Puzzles, building projects and cooking all teach this naturally.
Empathy and collaboration
Understanding others, working in a team, and resolving disagreements.
At home: Family projects where everyone has a role.
Ethical judgment
Thinking about fairness, honesty and the effects of our choices on others.
At home: Talk through real dilemmas: "Is it okay to use AI to make a picture of a friend?"
AI can be a powerful partner for kids who know how to think, create and care. Those skills are built through play, conversation and practice, one day at a time.
